The Bili Project Foundation has assembled an All-Star research team from the UCSF Medical Center to advance our understanding, detection, treatments and cures of Hepatobiliary cancers. Alan P. Venook, MD, is a nationally renowned expert in gastrointestinal cancers. Robert Kerlan, M.D. has extensive clinical experience in the management of liver disease, including biliary disease, portal hypertension and hepatic malignancy. Robin K. (“Katie”) Kelley, MD, is an American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Young Investigator Award winner and Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium ASCO Foundation Merit Award winner and was chief resident in medicine during her residency; she has been designated as project lead.

Alan P. Venook, MD

Dr. Venook is a nationally renowned expert in gastrointestinal cancers who has been appointed the Madden Family Distinguished Professor of Medical Oncology and Translational Research.  He leads the UCSF Gastrointestinal Oncology clinical program, and also chairs the Gastrointestinal Oncology Committee in a National Cancer Institute-sponsored Cooperative Group. Dr. Venook graduated from the UCSF School of Medicine, and spent two years in public health service following internship. He trained in internal medicine at UC Davis and in hematology and oncology at UCSF, where he joined the medical staff in 1988. His research focuses on the management of complex gastrointestinal cancers with the integration of new and developing therapies.

Robin K. (“Katie”) Kelley, MD
Health Sciences Professor of Clinical Medicine,
Division of Hematology Oncology
Department of Medicine

Dr. Kelley is a gastrointestinal oncologist who treats liver cancers such as hepatocellular carcinoma; bile duct cancers such as cholangiocarcinoma; gastric cancer; esophageal cancer; anal, colon and rectal cancer; pancreatic cancer; and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. In her research, her interests include developing clinical trials to identify new treatments for gastrointestinal malignancies, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma, and bile duct cancers.

Kelley graduated from UCLA School of Medicine and completed a residency at UCLA, where she was chief resident in medicine. She also completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology at UCSF. She received the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Young Investigator Award in 2010 and the Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium ASCO Foundation Merit Award in 2009. Kelley is co-author of a chapter on alimentary cancers in the textbook Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment.

Robert K. Kerlan, Jr. MD
Professor of Clinical Radiology,
Department of Radiology
Chief of Interventional Radiology,
UCSF Medical Center

Dr. Kerlan is chief of Interventional Radiology at UCSF Medical Center. He is particularly interested in the management of liver disease, including biliary disease, portal hypertension and hepatic malignancy. In his research, he is working to develop new procedures to diagnose and treat patients with problems related to living donor organ transplants.

Kerlan earned a medical degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He completed a radiology residency at UCSF and served as chief radiology resident. He is a member of several professional organizations, was president of the Western Angiographic and Interventional Society, was elected as a fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology, and in 2004 was given the UCSF Exceptional Physician Award. He is a Professor of Clinical Radiology and Surgery at UCSF.
